“People protect what they love. A lot of people attack the sea, I make love to it.” -Jacques Cousteau
Freediving is the fastest growing water sport in the world right now. But there is an amazing lack of content for the inexperienced thinking of starting their journey into freediving.
This is the podcast that we all wished was out there when we began our freediving journey. As with any subject, there is a lot of information out there on the internet, but very little of that is dedicated to help a total newbie make an informed decision about starting their journey into freediving.
After over 20 years chained to an equity trading desk at investment banks around Asia, Ray's life changed dramatically in early 2019 when he took his first freedive course. He fell in love with the art of one breath diving immediately. Two months later he passed his level two course and was determined to become a freedive instructor someday so he could share the joy of freediving with others.
That day would come sooner than he expected as two weeks later he was laid off from his job and a few weeks after that he was on Gili Air, Indonesia to get certified to become a freedive instructor by one of the most renowned freedive educators, Oli Christen.
Through his whole finance career he had only been focused on earning a good living. Now that he's found freediving, he's found a new purpose in life, to introduce freediving and its benefits to as many people as possible.
About the surge in popularity of freediving in Taiwan and my journey into freediving.
I chat with Eddy, owner of Eddy's Cantina in Tienmu, Taipei about my freediving journey, UFC 264, life on Xiaoliuqiu and my recently launched podcast, The Total Beginner Freedive Podcast.
"This week's of the Hong Kong #1 Podcast episode is with Raymond Ko, a freediving instructor based in Taiwan. Scuba diving and freediving, yes there is a difference! Breathing recommendations, the ability to hold your breath for up to eleven or more minutes. In addition to the health benefits of the meditative state while freediving. "
Wow Taiwan is a delightful program with the right amount of humour, fun, excitement and information on where to go or what to eat in Taiwan!
Special Thanks to Asuka Lee and Ray

After I graduated from university, I embarked on what I've been programmed to do, pursue a well-paying career and starting a family. I spent 20 years basically handcuffed to a desk and wasn't able to fulfill my desire to see the world. Since starting freediving I've dived in Taiwan, Palawan (Philippines), Gili Air and Bali (Indonesia), Koh Tao (Thailand) and Las Vegas, San Diego and Redondo Beach in USA, so hopefully it continues to be a self-fulfilled prophecy.
